Birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken’s (KFC) Original Recipe ®

Located in Corbin, Kentucky is the Harland Sanders Café and Museum and is where Colonel Sanders developed the famous KFC secret recipe.  Colonel Harland Sanders operated a restaurant and an adjacent motel at this location in Corbin, KY from 1940 to 1956.

The house where Colonel Sanders lived is nearby the Café and Museum.

Harland Sanders sold the café in 1956 soon after interstate 75 was completed and business slowed.  After selling the café, Harland began selling franchises for KFC.

A visit to Corbin, KY to see the Sanders Café and Museum is worth it.  The café and museum are about 1 hour and 20 minutes south of Lexington, KY along interstate 75 and are open Monday through Sunday 10 AM to 10 PM.

The Sanders Café and Museum address is: 688 US-25W, Corbin, KY 40701 and the phone # (606) 528-2163

The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in August 1990 (8/7/1990).

Reopened with World-Class Design

The museum and restaurant were recently re-opened to the public on April 22nd, 2022.  According to published news reports of the re-opening, KFC officials state, “The updated restaurant and museum now feature a, “unique and world-class design that preserves the historical integrity of the location.”

I had the great fortune to travel through Kentucky and visit the Sanders Café and Museum in Corbin, Kentucky this past Friday (May 6, 2022) with a friend.  The museum is a wonderful tribute to Colonel Sanders.  It shows the rich history of Sanders, his work ethic, and the focus Harland put on quality.

Museum Displays

The restaurant has many interesting museum displays and information about KFC and Colonel Sanders.

1)  This new paper article on display in the museum tells the story of how KFC was started with money from a Social Security check.

2)  The museum includes a replica of the early kitchen Colonel Sanders cooked his famous chicken.  The museum also include  quotes the Colonel lived by.  This quote resonated with me, "One has to remember that every failure can be a stepping stone to something better."

3) There are several pictures and videos of Colonel Harland David Sanders on display.  Here are a couple from the museum.
