SweetSpot - Barrington, Illinois

SweetSpot - Barrington, Illinois

Today I am sharing a local business in Barrington, Illinois I often take my kids to over the summer to spend some carefree time and to purchase old fashioned ice cream treats.  The shop is nostalgic, inviting, and feels cozy as the staff are kind and welcoming.

The SweetSpot is an old fashioned candy store and ice cream parlor and a favorite ice cream shop of mine.  Stepping foot into the shop the first time a few years ago flooded my mind with fond childhood memories and provided an opportunity for me to share some of my childhood stories with my kids.

This is a fantastic place to visit during the spring, summer, and early fall (aka warmer months).  The store is across the street from Barrington High school and stays open later when there is a football game or special event at the high school.

So, if you are visiting Barrington High school or are around that area the SweetSpot is a must stop during the summer.

The shop is designed as a classic sweet shop offering old time favorite candies and an old fashion ice cream parlor.

The shop offers a variety of candies, snacks, and munchies.  Inside the store is an old fashioned ice cream parlor offering malts, sundaes, banana splits, milk shakes, ice cream cones, and scoops of ice cream.

Final Thoughts

The SweetSpot in Barrington, Illinois is a great place to visit as the staff is welcoming, kind, and helpful.  The mix of candy, snacks, and ice cream treats was well thought out and the atmosphere of the shop is pleasant and inviting.

I recommend the SweetSpot for its cozy setting, nostalgic feel, and for the delicious old fashion ice cream parlor treats.

Fun at Art Institute of Chicago

Fun at Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois

Have you ever been to Chicago?

If not, you’re missing out!

The city of Chicago is lots of fun, and is home to many well-known museums, such as the Art Institute, Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, and much more!  We visited the city, and our trip was a blast!  We rode the train, ate at an incredible restaurant, and visited one of the museums that calls Chicago its home.

Our Amazing Day in Chicago, Illinois

To start off our trip we drove to a family friends house to meet up with them, and parked at their house, then we walked to the train station.  The train arrived and we boarded and made our way to the first destination of our trip, Lou Mitchell's!

Lou Mitchell's

After getting off the train, we left the station and walked to Lou Mitchell’s.  Lou Mitchell’s is a restaurant in Chicago and is known for their wonderful breakfast!  You may be thinking, what makes this restaurant different from any other breakfast restaurant?  Well, for starters, if there is a long line to get into the restaurant, they serve donut holes and milk duds to those waiting in line, which, if I may add, are delicious!  Also, for people who have a huge appetite, like me, you must visit this place the next time you’re in Chicago!  Unlike a normal restaurant, their portion sizes are two times bigger, and so, so delicious!

Art Institute

After breakfast, we left the restaurant and made our way the Art Institute.  To those who don’t like museums, and much less looking at art all day, give the Art Institute a chance!  It is an amazing museum and has lots of cool pieces to check out.

When we arrived at the museum, the first thing we decided to check out was the miniatures.  This might not seem like a cool thing to check out, but they were amazing!  They were little, tiny rooms of houses and it was so fascinating to look at all the little, tiny details that went into each one of them.

The next thing we decided to check out was the photography section.  In this section of the museum, there is a piece of art that is the entire length of the wall, and it was astounding to check out.  In all honesty it was fascinating to see how art can look different depending on how close you are to the piece.  This piece looks like clouds when you are standing a good distance from it, but when looking at it closely, it messes with your brain a little bit.  After checking the photography section and the miniatures out, we decided to explore the museum more.

What makes the Art Institute stand out to me is that the museum itself is a work of art.  From the entrance we walked in, the museum doesn’t look very big, and seems small.  Except, when we were exploring, I found that its actually huge, and has lots of things to see.  While exploring we saw lots of famous pieces of art, one of them being Nighthawks.

For more information go to the Art Institute web page:  https://www.artic.edu/

Other magnificent pieces of art we saw are below:

Train Ride back from Chicago

After having a blast at the Art Institute, we walked back to the train station.  When we arrived at the train station, we boarded the train to leave.  As the train was about to leave, all the stops were announced.  After hearing all the stops, we realized we had gotten on the wrong train by mistake!  We had gotten on the express train!  Luckily, we had gotten off the train just before it left the station.  We went back into the station to wait for our train, and we learned a very important lesson, always make sure to listen to all the stops the train makes, and, if your stop isn’t stated, get off the train right away!  We then boarded the correct train, and made our way to our stop, reflecting on the amazing day we had at the Art Institute in Chicago Illinois!

Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA)

Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) Index Explained

Along with the S&P 500 index, it is one of the most-watched stock market indexes in the world.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index was created by Charles Dow along with his business partner Edward Jones and was created to serve as a measure for the broader U.S. economy.  It is a price-weighted index tracking 30 large, blue-chip stocks trading on the NYSE and Nasdaq.

Founded in 1896, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is the second oldest U.S. market index.

Calculating the DJIA price

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the sum of the price of one share of stock for all the stocks included in the index divided by the Dow divisor (0.15172752595384 as of 12/27/2021).

The mathematical formula for the Dow Jones Industrial Average price is:
Sum (Component stock prices) / Dow Divisor

DJIA Company Selection

Changes to the DJIA are made as needed.  The index is re-evaluated from time to time to replace companies no longer meeting the listing criteria with ones that do.   Changes to the DJIA are precipitated by market developments and corporate actions like spin-offs.

A committee made up of 2 representatives from The Wall Street Journal and 3 from S&P Global, together, decide after evaluating companies and comparing the index to the broad market.

A stock must be a non-transportation or non-utility company in the S&P 500 to be considered for the DJIA.  According to S&P Global, the DJIA is “not governed by quantitative rules.”  S&P Global, which runs both the Dow and the S&P 500, indicates the rules for the DJIA are far more vague than the S&P 500 and says, “A stock is typically added only if the company has an excellent reputation, demonstrates sustained growth and is of interest to a large number of investors.”

Other rules the committee uses is that the company must be headquartered and incorporated in the U.S. and have a plurality of its revenue from the country.  A candidate company must also help the index maintain its desired exposure to the sector.

Final Thoughts on DJIA

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tracks 30 blue chip stocks from the U.S. market that are chosen by a committee to represent the larger U.S. economy.  It is one of the most watched market indexes along with the S&P 500.

Founded in 1896 by Charles Dow and Edward Jones, the DJIA index has a long history as a proxy for the overall U.S. economy.

Several exchange traded funds (etfs) and index mutual funds are setup to make it easy to invest money into the pool of DJIA companies.  This is considered relatively low risk because of the decent diversification within the pool of 30 DJIA companies.
